Etsy Q & A: Twitter Questions

This is the first post in the new Etsy Q & A series, where sellers can ask questions and get some help with any etsy problems :)

Q: When it comes to Etsy and twitter, how do you turn views into sales? When posting tweets about items in my etsy shop what is the best way to write them without sounding like a generic sales pitch?

A: Personally I don't consciously try to 'sell' to people on twitter. My strategy is to have a large following and I find that people will visit and purchase when they're interested in what you're saying in general- I don't actually post about my products all that frequently (mainly through automatic posts when I list something). So I'd say that in order for twitter to bring in sales, I'd focus on a) building up a large following- ie at least 2000 people because having a few hundred followers isn't really going to have much effect, b) making sure those followers are the right target market (not mainly other etsy sellers) and c) chatting and interacting as a real person rather than just posting links. I wrote a detailed article about how to find the right twitter audience and how to increase your following here.

Regarding the second part of your question, I would try not to post about items too frequently, and make sure you have a good balance with other types of tweets. When you do post about items, perhaps ask for feedback on particular things, or make a comment about them eg saying how excited you are about a new product or a nice compliment you received about a particular item etc. Just be genuine would be my advice :) Looking at your twitter account, I'd say you really need more followers and perhaps a lower proportion of shop related tweets. Hope that helps!

Q: I feel like i have reached a plateau. I use twitter and when i first started I was receiving new followers, getting many views on items and making sales. And right now things are a little slow. What is the best way to reach more people and get people to see what i have or broaden my twitter market?

A: As I mentioned above, I wrote a detailed article on exactly how to find more twitter followers and how to reach the right crowd here, so that should answer your question. I see that your twitter account has 56 followers- really I think you need in the thousands to see any results, so working through the advice in that article could make a big difference :)

Feel free to post questions in the comments and I'll try to answer some of them in the next post- don't forget to leave your shop link so I can feature you!
